“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to act” (Proverbs 3:27)
The women and children of South Sudan have suffered too much over the past 4-5 decades. It is time to invest in them and contribute to the rebuilding of their lives, their communities and their new nation! Do you want the privilege of being involved in making that happen?
In November 2012, after some hair-raising container adventures, we were able to celebrate Operation Solar Install - mission accomplished!
The provision of cost-effective and reliable ‘round-the-clock’ power for His House of Hope is essential. In a country like South Sudan, this is not easy to guarantee! Diesel generators are the only in-country option and diesel fuel is expensive. Renewable energy systems, especially solar power, become very attractive alternatives!
Based on the current and projected future needs of His House of Hope, an off-grid 15kw solar power system was installed in November 2012. Lives are being saved already, as the system powers oxygen concentrators, humidicribs, theatre lights and microscopes allowing essential health care to be delivered at any hour of the day or night. If managed well, its batteries will last 15 years and panels 25 years! Ongoing running costs will be minimal.
Mode Electrical is a Tasmanian company that specialises in renewable energy solutions for remote areas of Australia. Mode’s Director, Martin Dingemanse has donated labour and expertise to develop and build the system for His House of Hope, including overseeing installation in South Sudan. The system allows Mode to monitor outputs and efficiency via remote internet access and to troubleshoot as necessary, ensuring first world reliability amidst third world realities.
Seeing the potential of this idea become a reality has been such an exciting journey. Many mission hospitals in Africa have difficulties when handed over to national staff due to high overheads and operating costs. By saving ~$20 000 annually on diesel expenses, this solar power system will pay itself off in just 5-6 years, radically reducing the operating costs of the hospital and allowing more dollars to go directly into frontline health care! With a 15-25 year guarantee on the solar power system, this is smart investment – $100 000 donated now for solar will save at least $300 000 in diesel costs over the lifetime of the system!
Our thanks to everyone who has contributed to this project. May God receive the glory and may the women and children of South Sudan receive the benefit for decades to come!

Our God is “Jehovah Jireh” (God, the Provider), who can provide through any means he chooses, but who often likes to provide through the generosity of ordinary people. Just as God has prompted us to be ‘go-ers’, we believe he also prompts others to be ‘send-ers’. We are so thankful for the team of generous people he has gathered around us whose faithful and regular contributions enable us to live and serve amongst the people of South Sudan. You are welcome to join this team, and share the joy of being involved in what God is doing at His House of Hope!
If we are fortunate enough to receive support in excess of our proposed budget, then we still want to honour the heart behind those contributions. We will direct those extra funds to assist South Sudanese to pursue medical, nursing or other health related training. This is a long-term strategy to build capacity amongst the Sudanese people to sustain the work that His House of Hope is committed to.

closeExperience has shown that providing ‘free medical care’ often introduces harmful dependency and restricts a community’s development towards self-respect and sustainability. As a result, His House of Hope charges fees for service, but also relies on overseas donations to subsidise operating costs. Antenatal care, deliveries, preterm care and inpatient care for malnourished children are charged well below true cost in order to reduce financial barriers to care.
We started the “HHH Project Fund – Compassion” for the benefit of those patients that require compassionate assistance to pay their fees or to assist transport to access higher level health services in Uganda. Our indigenous counselor and pastors have key roles in assessing each situation. This is to ensure that funds are directed to those most in need, and provided in a manner that promotes co-contribution, avoids paternalism, increases self-respect and encourages thankfulness to God.
Examples of costs include:
Outpatient consultation – $5
Blood transfusion (per unit) – $20
Preterm care in special care nursery (often 2-4 weeks)- $40
Inpatient care for malnourished child (usually 2-3 weeks) – $40
Antenatal care (including ultrasound, screening tests and visits) – $15
Uncomplicated delivery – $15
Complicated delivery – $25-$50
Caesarean section – $200
Transport to access services in Uganda – $200

Past projects….. Small scale projects such as purchasing of apnoea monitors, cardiotocographs and other specialised equipment have improved the quality and scope of care. Larger scale projects have included construction of a new Special Care Nursery and Labour Ward, completed in February 2014.
Current project….. From November 2015, we have been fundraising for the construction of a new laboratory facility. This has been in partnership with the Australian-based Sonic Healthcare Catalyst Program. The expanded laboratory will not only improve patient care and provide an ideal training ground for local South Sudanese laboratory technicians, but will also be an important centre for research and data collection. The purpose built laboratory will include a new microbiology section allowing research into prevalence of endemic disease like typhoid and paratyphoid fever and antimicrobial resistance patterns in the local community. Data would be used to guide clinicians in safe and rational use of antimicrobials.

closeWe have created translator positions at HHH for young men and women who are recent graduates from secondary school and interested in pursuing careers in health care. This gives them first-hand experience in a variety of hospital departments. Those who demonstrate the appropriate character, skills and commitment and successfully apply for certificate or diploma courses in health care are given assistance towards tuition fees. They will then return to HHH following their training for internship experience.
All staff currently receive on-the-job mentoring and professional development. In addition, as opportunities arise, they are given support to attend short courses to further increase their knowledge and skills.
We hope, by these initiatives, to develop a solid core of well-trained, experienced and committed health care professionals, with missional hearts, who want to invest their lives serving in the difficult and needy areas of South Sudan.
